Non-Accredited Courses

At our institution, all our materials are accredited, however, the non-accredited courses are not sent away for external review. Certification is in-house, and upon completion, participants will not be provided with a Statement of Results from SETA, but one from our institution.

Qualification as an Interpreter
Completing an accredited SASL course does not qualify one to be an interpreter. Becoming a qualified interpreter is a rigorous, lengthy process, with the highest achievable level being accreditation from the South African Translators Institute (SATI). With less than 15 SATI-accredited interpreters in South Africa, the standard is exceptionally high. Our courses provide foundational knowledge and are a stepping stone towards a career in interpreting, if participants are committed to daily practice and immersion in Deaf culture and Sign Language. It’s crucial to avoid accepting or requesting payment for services in interpreting without proper qualifications.
Encouragement for Regular Practice
We encourage participants to regularly engage with the Deaf community in social settings. Socialization with Deaf individuals will allow for immersion in the language and culture you are studying. It will give you the best opportunity to grasp the structure and flow of SASL and get to know the people who use it every day.
