Empower Deaf individuals through inclusion

At DEAFinition, we are dedicated to ensuring that every Deaf individual has equal access to information and resources. Our inclusion solutions are designed to bridge the communication gap and empower Deaf individuals. You can be part of this transformative journey.

At DEAFinition, we believe that inclusion isn’t just a checkbox—it’s a commitment to understanding, learning, and embracing diversity. Our services empower organizations to create workplaces where everyone thrives, regardless of their hearing abilities.

DEAFinition App

Our DEAFinition App is a powerful tool that teaches basic South African Sign Language (SASL) to users. By promoting language proficiency, it enables better communication between Deaf and hearing individuals within the workplace. Whether you’re a colleague, manager, or client, this app equips you with essential signs to bridge the communication gap.

Common Workplace Signs

Communication barriers can hinder productivity and understanding. Our Common Workplace Signs Posters display frequently used signs, making it easier for everyone to interact. These posters serve as visual aids, promoting efficient communication and fostering an inclusive environment. From simple greetings to workplace-specific signs, they enhance understanding and collaboration.

Support products

We offer practical support products that help identify Deaf personnel to the general public:

  • “I am Deaf” Name Badges: These badges proudly declare an individual’s Deaf identity, creating awareness and facilitating respectful interactions.
  • “I am Deaf” Waistcoats: Our waistcoats serve as a visible marker, signaling that the wearer is part of the Deaf community. They encourage understanding and empathy among colleagues and clients.

Deaf Sensitisation Training

Transitioning existing staff into an inclusive workplace requires understanding and empathy. Our Deaf Sensitisation Training is specifically designed to achieve this. Through interactive workshops, participants gain insights into Deaf culture, communication nuances, and best practices. By fostering empathy and awareness, we create a more inclusive work environment.

SASL Training

South African Sign Language (SASL) is a valuable skill for anyone interacting with Deaf colleagues or clients. Our SASL Training offers various courses, empowering participants to communicate effectively. Whether you’re a beginner or seeking advanced proficiency, our skilled facilitators guide you through this rich and expressive language.

Non-Accredited Courses

At our institution, all our materials are accredited, however, the non-accredited courses are not sent away for external review. Certification is in-house, and upon completion, participants will not be provided with a Statement of Results from SETA, but one from our institution.

Qualification as an Interpreter
Completing an accredited SASL course does not qualify one to be an interpreter. Becoming a qualified interpreter is a rigorous, lengthy process, with the highest achievable level being accreditation from the South African Translators Institute (SATI). With less than 15 SATI-accredited interpreters in South Africa, the standard is exceptionally high. Our courses provide foundational knowledge and are a stepping stone towards a career in interpreting, if participants are committed to daily practice and immersion in Deaf culture and Sign Language. It’s crucial to avoid accepting or requesting payment for services in interpreting without proper qualifications.
Encouragement for Regular Practice
We encourage participants to regularly engage with the Deaf community in social settings. Socialization with Deaf individuals will allow for immersion in the language and culture you are studying. It will give you the best opportunity to grasp the structure and flow of SASL and get to know the people who use it every day.
