Sourcing Deaf Employees

Step-by-step recruitment

Our straightforward recruitment process will help you navigate the employment of a Deaf person while educating your hearing staff on cultural differences and best practice.

1.

Consultation

Understanding Your Needs

We begin by understanding your unique needs and environment. Our DEAFinition consultant will have a chat with you to ensure we align with your expectations.

2.

Sourcing and Screening

Finding the Right Fit

Our experienced team then springs into action, sourcing and screening candidates that match your job requirements and specifications.

3.

Health and Safety Compliance

Prioritizing Safety

Health and safety compliance is crucial. We go the extra mile, involving our Deaf staff to visit your premises and work with your team to ensure full compliance.

4.

Interviews

Effective Communication

Interviews with the screened Deaf candidates are facilitated through a South African Sign Language (SASL) interpreter to ensure effective communication.

Step By Step Guide to Reasonable Accommodation

As part of our annual service to you, we provide monthly post placement support visits. This is a key component to our service, as it allows both the Deaf and the hearing to express themselves fully in their own language and not allow issues to escalate unnecessarily due to miscommunication / misunderstanding. Being Deaf can sometimes lead to feelings of isolation, and our monthly visits often mitigate this, resulting in more confident and productive employees.

1.

Sensitization Workshop

Successful Integration

To ensure a seamless integration of a Deaf individual into your workplace, we recommend booking a sensitization workshop. It’s a vital step towards success.

2.

Induction

First Day Support

Once you’ve selected the most suitable candidate, we provide an interpreter for the first full day of induction at your premises.

3.

Workplace Support

Ensuring Comfort

We provide common workplace signs posters, notebooks, and pens for Deaf staff, along with high visibility waistcoats if needed. Our monthly post placement support visits ensure seamless integration and comfort.

Non-Accredited Courses

At our institution, all our materials are accredited, however, the non-accredited courses are not sent away for external review. Certification is in-house, and upon completion, participants will not be provided with a Statement of Results from SETA, but one from our institution.

Qualification as an Interpreter
Completing an accredited SASL course does not qualify one to be an interpreter. Becoming a qualified interpreter is a rigorous, lengthy process, with the highest achievable level being accreditation from the South African Translators Institute (SATI). With less than 15 SATI-accredited interpreters in South Africa, the standard is exceptionally high. Our courses provide foundational knowledge and are a stepping stone towards a career in interpreting, if participants are committed to daily practice and immersion in Deaf culture and Sign Language. It’s crucial to avoid accepting or requesting payment for services in interpreting without proper qualifications.
Encouragement for Regular Practice
We encourage participants to regularly engage with the Deaf community in social settings. Socialization with Deaf individuals will allow for immersion in the language and culture you are studying. It will give you the best opportunity to grasp the structure and flow of SASL and get to know the people who use it every day.
